Have you ever lit a candle in memory of someone? Or maybe lit one on the dinner table in preparation for a romantic dinner? Or perhaps you've lit candles in a religious ceremony for peace. What about that yearly birthday wish over the cake? Without realizing it, you've just participated in a simple form of the most basic magickal ritual...candle magick! People have been using candles in rituals for centuries to create a sense of ceremony and invoke the divine. But what many people don't realize is that they really do have the ability to make wishes come true. By using specific intent, you can use candles to clarify your desires and engage in a little "wishcraft." Here are a few guidelines for basic candle magick. Any new candle will work in a pinch, and white is always a good choice, but different colors correspond to different energies. Black

When choosing candles, make sure to use virgin ones. Never ever use an old candle that's already been lit, especially if it was for another purpose...that would be counter-productive! We want our intents to be fresh, because old vibrations or energies may still be within the candle. For this same reason, we should even cleanse virgin candles. It's a good idea to "dress" the candle with an appropriate oil, one made for the same intent. This puts more special energy into the candle and creates a psychic link. By rubbing oil into the candle, you are charging it with your own vibrations and sending your desire into the wax. Concentrate when you do this! Now the candle will be an extension of your mental power. Always try to burn candles in the same place, a sacred area or altar that you have set up. Perhaps it's merely a box flipped over in the corner of your kitchen with a cloth napkin on the top. That will work fine, but make sure that you have designated this space for ritual work only. That box is now sacred! When you have charged a candle with your intent and meditated on its purpose, light it and state with clear intent your desire as if you already have it. Don't say "I would like, please..." Be forceful. This is no time to be a woosie! Say "I have...!" Chanting your intent for awhile is a good idea. Leave the candle undisturbed, letting it burn down completely if you can. If you must leave the house, you can always put it in the fireplace or a tub to be safe. But watch out for children or animal companions! If you feel that you must extinguish it, pinch or snuff it out and relight it when you return. Try to time your candle-burning to correspond with the cycles of the moon. You can find out this info from your local newspaper or by consulting an almanac. When the moon is waxing, or going from new to full, this is the time to attract things, no matter what they are. If you are trying to get rid of something, do your magick while the moon is waning, or going from full to new. New moons are the perfect time to start new projects or spells. And the full moon is good for any powerfulwork that needs to be done. |

As you become more adept at candle magick, you may want to start reading up on the planetary days and hours so you can focus more precisely and get a little more help from the universe for certain purposes. You can also carve symbols into candles that correspond to your needs (a dollarsign for money, a heart for love, or some other astrological symbol or rune). Anything that helps to intensify the purpose is good. The most important thing to remember is that you must focus on being receptive and open to what you want and don't doubt yourself or your abilities. Go get 'em, Ferocious! But just be careful what you wish for...Ask and you shall receive! |
