Long ago when the earth was young, a Native American spiritual leader was on a high mountain and had a vision. In his vision the Great weaver Goddess appeared to him in the form of a spider. She spoke to him in a sacred language only elders could understand. As she spoke, she took the elders willow hoop which had feathers, horse hair, beads and other offerings on it and began to spin a web. She spoke to the elder about the cycles of life... how we begin our lives as infants, move on to childhood and then to adulthood. then finally we get to our old age where we have to be taken care of as infants again completing the cycle. She said "In each time of our life there are many forces and different directions that can help or interfere with the harmony of nature, and also with Great Spirit's wonderful teachings." She gave the web to the elder and said "See the web is a perfect circle, but there is a hole in the center. If you believe in Great Spirit the web will catch bad dreams and visions allowing good dreams and visions to pass through. Use the web to help yourself and your people to reach your goals and make good use of ideas, dreams, and visions." The elder passed this gift of knowledge to his people and now even to this day we use the dreamcatchers web in our life. It is to be hung above the bed or in the home to sift through dreams and visions, allowing the good to be passed to us, but catching the bad or harmful energies holding them to be burned away by the next day's sun. |
