Lughnasadh...Lammas.. Loafmass... August 1st or 2nd The first of the Harvest festivals.. (a grain festival .) We will be making corn dollies to sacrifice at Samhain. For those of you who are not aware of Lughnasadh the following is a brief insight to the celebration. Way back in the mist of our species origins we slowly developed an awareness that we came from some where. As we looked outside ourselves for help we became aware of a greater reality and a presence. We discovered that it has many aspects to it and one of them God Lugh (pronounced Loo). Lugh is the Celtic Sun God who is worshipped for the Harvest and is the protector of the weak and ill. Because of the knowledge he bestowed upon us we celebrate the harvesting of the first crops in his honor. Legend has it that Lugh can take on human form and will worship with the Druids. He also dwelled many years among the Tuatha De Danann as their king (an early Celtic people). He was also a consort to Dana a Great Mother Goddess of Ireland. Even though the celebrations in his honor it can not be ignored that the Goddess is responsible for the nurturing of the harvest. Without her patience and love there would not be a healthy crop. However back to the point, Lugh is sacrificed and reborn as the harvest. The corn dollies represent our own rebirth. We think our negative thoughts, ideas and emotions into the dolly so that it can manifest our higher potional by burning it into a fire to release us from our limitations. This usually takes up to 2 months until Samhain occurs, when we put them into the cauldron of transformation. |
