VOX STELLARUM - The Voice Of The Stars, The importance of astrology in magic

Is your magic not working?

It always surprises me how many beginning Wiccans and pagans start practicing magical rites without a foundation of knowledge in the celestial arts.

While no scientist would argue against the negative and unseen effects of radioactive elements upon our lives such as holding a simple chunk of uranium, many ignore the influence of the planets and constellations. Astrology is the most ancient of sciences, used by Sumerians, Mesopotamians, Egyptians, Druids, Romans, Indians, Chinese and many others. In modern times, the list includes former President Ronald Reagan, financier J.P. MORGAN, and probably many others who won't admit it.

So how does astrology affect rational (and irrational) modern humans?

There was a famous experiment where some scientists took clams out of their seabeds and moved them to a Midwestern state. At first, the clams still opened their shells at the same time they would have in their seabeds. However, after a while they adjusted their schedule to match the moon's position over that part of the country, thousands of miles from their home. If the gravitational power of the moon reaches through the seas and across the lands to affect simple creatures such as clams, so too can the rest of the universe with other living organisms. Everything is connected.

The universe of astrology begins with constellations and planets. At the simplest level, the energies of space may work through the push and pull of gravity. On other levels, the complex mix of forces creates a stew of ever-changing influences, but with some more stable energies. The astrological signs representing constellations are metaphorical representations of particular energies on a grand scale. Planets are also symbolic of forces affecting our day-to-day lives.

To use astrology in our magical work we have to know what energies and forces are in effect. What sign is ruling the sun, are the planets in retrograde or opposing each other, where is the phase of the moon and under what sign's influence? Even most beginners in the magical arts know the difference between the waxing and waning moon. Novices start to use their personal charts and the planets' positions. More advanced practitioners go much further when working with the energies.

I believe ritual planning should begin after the new moon, during the week of first quarter of the moon. The real work may begin during the second quarter of the 28-day cycle of the moon. That is the day/night when the light/dark phases of the moon are of equal length, approximately seven days before the full moon.

For instance, Thursday, August 26, 1999 the full moon is in Pisces at 6:48 p.m. The moon enters that sign earlier in the day at 12:49 p.m. The sun is in Virgo, but that is less important than knowing one's own particular natal chart and how it interacts with Pisces and the alignment of the planets that night. These are the most basic facts to know before planning magical rites, let alone performing them. For the Pisces full moon magical rites should be concerned with going beyond the boundaries of body and mind, a Piscean activity.

To work with the energies of the universe first learn as much as you can about your own particular astrological chart. Know your strengths and weakness. Then, when doing magical rites always know what is happening in the sky using a good almanac that list daily planetary activity. No matter what, it can only help to work with the energies of the sky and your chart, not against them.
